Although Bossa Nova’s origins are rooted in the beach culture and neighborhoods of Rio, the music has found a home in contemporary London on the Far Out Recordings Label.

The brainchild of producer, DJ, and avid music fan Joe Davis, Far Out Recordings began as a grassroots label in 1994 with a mission dedicated to carrying the sound of Brazil to the rest of the planet.

Almost two decades have passed since the label’s humble beginnings and Far Out Recordings has grown to feature an impressive roster of artists that hail from Brazil as well as from Europe and America. These musicians share the label’s vision of maintaining a uniquely Brazilian “vibe” to their art.  If one is to judge from the glowing reviews the label has received in the music press, then they have succeeded in this endeavor.

You can view the diverse catalogue of recordings by visiting the label’s website as well as sample some of the free downloads they offer.

The compilation album Far Out Bossa Nova is a collection of the best Bossa Nova style output from the label over the years since it’s inception.  The record’s release was timed to celebrate 50 years of Bossa Nova and includes great tunes from bona fide Bossa and Samba veterans such as Joyce, Dori Caymmi, Roberto Menescal, Marcos Valle and the wonderful Os Ipanemas.

Also featured on this lovely collection are songs from younger musicians like Clara Moreno, Zeep and the Nu Bossa grooves of Sabrina Malheiros.   The closing track is a spacey rendition of the Bossa Nova standard “Dindi” performed by the late Brazilian Saxophonist, Victor Assis Brasil.  This is an album worth checking out and it is available in a variety of formats from Far Out Recordings.
