Quench your thirst with this Classic

First appearing on the album, “The Composer of Desafinado Plays” in 1963, the song, “Agua de Beber” has become a standard for both bossa nova and American Jazz. It is another of the many works crafted by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes. The former is the composer and De Moraes provides the lyrics.

Agua de Beber – Antonio & Vinicius

As often is the case with Vinicius lyricism, the song is majorly metaphoric. As well nature is one of the re-occurring themes in Jobim’s catalogue and it’s present on this track. The persona of the song compares the love he receives from his romantic partner to the water that plants receive. Similarly to how the plant cannot survive without water, the persona implies that he cannot live without the water and in this way his fate and happiness is dependent on his significant other. The song is one Jobim’s more upbeat compositions with a lead melody that flows like water and riffs that hit like the rain drops on the roof of a home.

The English lyrics were written by Normal Gimbel and has since been performed by a number of American Jazz artists, most notable among these are Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald.

Eu quis amar, mas tive medo
E quis salvar meu coração
Mas o amor sabe um segredo
O medo pode matar o seu coração
Água de beber
Água de beber, camará
Água de beber
Água de beber, camará!
Eu nunca fiz coisa tão certa
Entrei pra escola do perdão
A minha casa vive aberta
Abre todas as portas do coração!
Água de beber
Água de beber, camará
Água de beber
Água de beber, camará!
Your love is rain, my heart the flower.
I need your love or I will die.
My very life is in your power,
will I wither and fade or blossom in the sky.
Agua de beber,
give the flower water to drink.
Agua de beber,
give the flower water to drink.
The rain can fall on distant deserts,
the rain can fall upon the sea.
The rain can fall upon the flowers.
Since the rain has to fall, let it fall on me.
Agua de beber,
agua de beber camara.
Agua de beber,
agua de beber camara.
I'll never see another springtime,
I'll never feel the summer sun
unless you're there to share that springtime
and like the rain and the flower our hearts are one.
Agua de beber,
give the flower water to drink.
Agua de beber,
give the flower water to drink.
