For us to tell the story of Bossa Nova in the Netherlands we must begin with the “leading lady”of Brazilian music of the central european nation Josee Koning and her band Batida. She has worked with the likes of Dorival Caymmi as well as Joao Bosco. Josee has been a main stay in the Dutch musical landscape. Josee has also taken charge and sought to impart her knowledge and experience as a teacher and instructor at the Amsterdam as we well as Rotterdam Conservatories. Her work has lead to the rise of a number of other dutch artistes as well as foreign artistes such as Eva Kieboom of the band Sensual, Mrs. (Femke) Smit of  the band Mrs. Smit & the boys from Brazil, as well as Magda Mendes and Maria Mendes of Portugal. the Netherlands is home to a number of local as well as expat artistes. Yasam Hancilar from Turkey and Fulvia di Domenico from Italy are examples.  Caroline Lobanov, Tamara Maria, Jo Sarah, Marzie Reyhani (from the band Dirindi). Brazilians that live in or spend a great deal of time in Holland are Ceumar, Marcelo Godoy, Nelson Latif as well as the alread featured Lilian Vieira.

Festivals & Shows

The North Sea Jazz festival is one of the largest jazz festivals in the world which has been held in Rotterdam since 2006. It has seen perform a number of Jazz & Brazilian music legends including Stan Getz,João Bosco, Marcos Valle, Sergio Mendes as well as others. There is also the Viva Brasil Festival held in Amsterdam, with artistes such as Jorge Ben, Tania Maria, Djavan, Gal Costa, Daniela Mercury, Olodum and Ed Motta. There are a number of events held at the North Sea Jazz Club as well as the Bimhuis , both located in Amsterdam which have been host to great artistes such as Hamilton de Holanda with Andre Mehmari, Virginia Rodrigues, Azymuth, Trio Madeira Brasil, Wanda Sa , Marcos Valle and  Patricia Alvi.
