For us to tell the story of Bossa Nova in the Netherlands we must begin with the “leading lady”of Brazilian music of the central european nation Josee Koning and her band Batida. She has worked with the likes of Dorival Caymmi as well as Joao Bosco. Josee has been a main stay in the Dutch musical landscape. Josee has also taken charge and sought to impart her knowledge and experience as a teacher and instructor at the Amsterdam as we well as Rotterdam Conservatories. Her work has lead to the rise of a number of other dutch artistes as well as foreign artistes such as Eva Kieboom of the band Sensual, Mrs. (Femke) Smit of the band Mrs. Smit & the boys from Brazil, as well as Magda Mendes and Maria Mendes of Portugal. the Netherlands is home to a number of local as well as expat artistes. Yasam Hancilar from Turkey and Fulvia di Domenico from Italy are examples. Caroline Lobanov, Tamara Maria, Jo Sarah, Marzie Reyhani (from the band Dirindi). Brazilians that live in or spend a great deal of time in Holland are Ceumar, Marcelo Godoy, Nelson Latif as well as the alread featured Lilian Vieira.
