Obtaining his first guitar at the age of 14 and drawing his inspiration from American Jazz, Brazilian popular music and opera he led a band during his high school years.

During the 50s, Joao Gilberto performed as the lead singer in a vocal quintet the Moon boys in Rio de Janeiro. However, he was removed a year and a half after joining because of lack of discipline.

Afterwards his career hit a low point and he battled with chronic depression. In 1955 he was taken to the southern city of Porte Alegre by the leader of another vocal group Luiz Telles and it is here Joao blossomed.

It was in  his sisters bathroom in Diamantina, Minas Gerais that Joao developed the Bossa Nova(“new style”),writing the first ever song of the genre “Bim-Bom”.

Joao Gilberto reacquainted himself with Antonino Carlos Jobim in 1956 and in 1959 Gilberto released a Bossa style of a song by Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes called “Chega de Saudade”. The song became a hit and launched Joao and the genre to stardom.

Joao went on to live in America from 1962-1969 and from there spent two years in Mexico before returning to Brazil in 1980.

Over the years Joao Gilberto has gone on to produce best selling records including the worlds favorite Garota De Ipanema (The Girl from Ipanema) , albums and perform to sell out crowds across the Americas ,Europe and Japan.

He now resides in  Brazil .
