Vinicius de Moraes
Vinicius began his literary work in high school where he would write theatrical sketches , he also sang on the choir. In 1929 he was admitted to the Faculty of Law at the University of Rio de Janeiro(currently called National School of Law of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro ). He became friends with essayist and novelist Octavio de Faria and through his encouragement Vinicius’ literary ability flourished as he produced collections of poetry, sonnets and books which would be a constant throughout his life . Faria’s attraction to Vinicius eventually led to a separation of the two.
He was awarded a scholarship to study literature and English language at Oxford University and during this period in England saw a shift in his poetic style. After his return to Brazil Vinicius held many positions including film critic and the vice consul of Brazil in Los Angeles.
The poet turned playwright with his work on Orfeu da Conceição which was performed originally in 1956. It was on this project that he was first introduced to the then unknown pianist Tom Jobim and would go on to form a partnership that would last decades. He along with Tom composed the music for Elizete Cardoso’s Canção do Amor Demais the first Bossa Nova album. In 1962 he wrote what would become one of the most popular songs of all time Garota de Ipanema (Girl from Ipanema).
Focusing his career down the musical route Vinícius aided in the establishment of many up and coming artistes of the day such as Nara Leão. He went on to work with many notable Brazilian artistes such as Baden Powell ,Toquinho and Chico Buarque touring and composing music.
