Helo Pinheiro: The girl from Ipanema

The hit that launched Bossa Nova to a worldwide audience . It was originally written and composed  by Vinicius de Moraes and Antonio Carlos Jobim in 1962 with  English lyrics later being provided by Norman Gimbel. The song was initially done for a production being done by Vinicius named Dirigível (Blimp). As the name suggests the song was centered around a girl from the southern neighborhood of Ipanema in Rio de Janeiro,Brazil. We know her as Helô Pinheiro, model and business woman. Astrud Gilberto whose voice is heard for the English version of the song was often mistaken as the Girl from Ipanema.

The Astrud Gilberto version on the Get/Gilberto album gained world wide acclaim and won the 1965 Grammy Award for Record of the Year. In 2004 the record was selected among 50 others to be entered into the National Recording Registry by the Library of Congress.
