It is often the mark of great men in history that their life be attached to a common name. For instance throughout history there have been many persons with the name Caesar but when you think of the word Caesar, it is almost always the legendary roman general, Julius Caesar that comes to mind. There have been several famous men in fields such as sports and entertainment with the same name. There was even another lesser known roman emperor; but without a doubt it is Julius Caeser that usually comes to mind when one thinks of the “Caesar”.  The same can be said about another great man, the Brazilian father of bossa nova lyricism, Vinicius De Moraes.

Though his full name maybe Marcus Vinicius da Cruz e Mello Moraes, he is known around the world as Vincius De Moraes and to many he is the first person that comes to mind when the name “Vinicius is brought up. A common name in Brazil and other Portuguese speaking nations there are thousands of persons with the name Vinicius. I decide to do a little research and see which other prominent persons have had the name “Vinicius”

This search led me to find out about a number of persons named Vinicius throughout history, in sports, arts, entertainment politics and more. I will highlight some of the more famous examples.

Marcus Vinicius (consul 19 BC)

Marcus Vinicius

Interestingly enough, perhaps the first famous Vinicius was a consul and general to the first roman emperor. He had a distinguished military and political career and was known to enjoy a lifelong friendship with the emperor. As one would imagine, not much links this historical figure to the Brazilian poet except for the fact that both served their government. Vinicius de Moraes was a diplomat and ironically his first position was that of vice consul.

Vinícius Bergantin

Vinicius Bergantin

With Brazil being the football capital of the world it would come as little surprise that there would have to be a few players the country produced with the name Vinicius. Remarkably, none of them have featured for the Brazilian senior national team. Currently only one Vinicius, Vinicius Santos Silva of Palmeiras, plays for Brazil at any age level and that is at the under 20 level.

Probably the most successful footballer with the name vinicius at a professional club level in Euroupe is Vinícius Bergantin. At a younge age he impressed at local clubs Ituano, São Caetano and Gama before a successful loan stint earned him a permanent move to Bundesliga club Hannover 96. He enjoyed 5 seasons there before a spinal disc herniation ruled him out for 2 years. Currently he plays for Americana Futebol in the second division of Brazilian football.

Vinícius de Oliveira

Vinicius De Oliveira

The last Vinicus I am going to highlight is Vinícius de Oliveira, a Brazilian actor. His life plays out like something you would read from the romantic prose of  Vinicius de Moraes. Born into a poor, single-parent family with 3 siblings, his life was never going to be easy. Despite having a natural talent for football he had to employ himself as a shoes hinner to help support his family. Miraculously, one day as he was performing his task of shoe shining he was spotted by internationally renowned Director Walter Salles. It was a destined meeting which led to him being cast in a major role for the acclaimed film “Central do Brasil.” It was highly rated by experts and film makers and was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign film.  10 years later after the huge success of Central do brasil in 2008, Salles casted Vinicius as the leading actor in “Linha de Passe.” The film would be another critical success being nominated for the highly prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes film festival that year.

Vinicius de Moraes most notable foray into the world of theatre came in 1959 when he wrote for the movie “Black Orpheus.” The film is widely regarded as one of the best films Brazil has ever made and won the Palme d’Or and the Academy Award and Golden Globe award for Best Foreign Language film. Notably it featured a sound track with bossa nova classic by the likes of Antonio Carlos Jobim and Luiz Bonfa

There is only one Vincius

The information above is evidence that there have existed quite a few talented and influential persons with the name Vinicius.  Indeed, I had to limit my selection to those above and left out others such as politicians and entertainers. Despite this when the name Vinicius is mentioned to most persons in Brazil, one name comes to mind first. When one considers his status as a cultural icon, innovator and  multifaceted genius,it seems fitting that he would have such notoriety in his country of birth especifically but also all around the world.

Whereas the persons mentioned above excelled in one chosen field. Vinicius De Moares is arguably the most influential Vinicius in the fields of music, poetry, drama and maybe even in foreign affairs as a diplomat. There really is only one Vincius.
