Finish singer Laila Kinnunen performed bossa nova standards in her native tongue

In the 1950s and 1960s bossa nova was a craze spreading across the world. The popularity of the music also coincided with the rise of Laila Kinnunen’s career.  She got her break after winning a singing contest while still a teenager and would go on to be one of the most popular finish singers for much of the 60’s and 70’s.

Her decision to experiment with the new craze is one that in hindsight seems predictable but the result isn’t. “Ipaneman tyttö ” is her version of the classic, “The Girl from Ipanema.” The arrangement is typically sparse but hearing the song in finnish does separate it from the countless interpretations. Enjoy, or as they say in Finland, “Nauti.”
